The word Orange is based on the Sanskrit word Nāranga, meaning fruit. It was only in the 1300s that the English adapted the word to describe the fruit and colour. The orange tree is a hybrid originally cultivated in provinces of Southwest China. It traveled through the Silk Road to India and was later recorded as part of the famous hanging gardens of Babylon in 800 BC.
In the 13th century, it journeyed through the Silk Road to various countries, including Portugal, France, and Italy, where it is cultivated widely. Today, a significant portion of citrus essential oil-bearing plants are cultivated in Brazil.
